Catamount Arts and the St. Johnsbury Town Band are hosting Make Music Day on June 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Catamount Arts garden lot, 115 Eastern Avenue. The event is free and open to musicians and music students of all ages and experience levels.
The celebration is divided into two participatory sessions. From 2 to 2:30 p.m., musicians can join a band reading session led by St. Johnsbury Band Assistant Director Kirsten Harter. Music will be provided; attendees should bring their own instrument and a music stand.
“I hope band students from all over the region will consider coming to Make Music Day and join in on some Sousa marches,” said Catamount Arts Community Liaison Andrea Otto. “A conductor will lead the musicians, but the point isn’t a rehearsed concert. The point is to encourage folks to bring their instruments and join in.”
Otto added, “If you used to play in a school band, if you’ve got a clarinet gathering dust in your closet, whether you last played 20 years or 20 minutes ago, you’re invited.”
Part Two, “In One A-Chord,” is a strum-along led by local folk musicians Abby and Carl Johnson, Tom Stamp, and Jess Simpson. Community members are encouraged to bring instruments and join a large community jam session, expected to run from about 2:45 to 4 p.m.
