COVENTRY, The Northeast Kingdom International Airport will observe its 75th anniversary on Saturday, August 22, 2020. The airport, originally known as Newport State Airport, sits on the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog and serves both Vermont's Northeast Kingdom and Canadian travelers.
Opened in 1945 to support military operations, the facility has since evolved into a full-service jetport. The Vermont Agency of Transportation, with support from the Federal Aviation Administration, has invested in major infrastructure upgrades over the past decade.
Improvements include a 5,300-foot expanded runway, a full parallel taxiway, a new fuel farm offering JetA and 100LL, clear approaches, a wastewater system, and a snow removal equipment building for winter maintenance. A fixed-base operator provides fueling, de-icing, aircraft maintenance, flight instruction, and scenic rides.
Airport police note that space remains available for new aviation-related businesses in private and corporate hangars.
