An 81-year-old Newport Center man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that killed a motorcyclist on October 3. Vermont State Police say Howard Collins was issued a criminal citation to answer the charge of negligent operation with death resulting after he turned into the path of the motorcycle on Route 100.
The crash occurred around 3 p.m. near the intersection with Collins Mill Road. According to investigators, Collins was driving south and failed to see an approaching motorcycle ridden by Jordan Carpenter, 20, of Newport, before making a left turn. Carpenter braked but could not avoid the collision and died at the scene.
Police consulted with the Orleans County State's Attorney before issuing the citation. Collins will appear in court for arraignment on December 27. The affidavit of probable cause will be filed with the court and made public after that hearing, according to state police.
NEK will be looking into the court records after the arraignment to examine the details of the affidavit.
