BARTON, The Orleans County Fairgrounds is putting the finishing touches on a new 60-stall horse barn, the largest construction project at the site since Floral Hall was built in 1969. Fundraising for the barn began years ago, and organizers say community support has been key to reaching this point.
Sonia Koehler and Art LaPlante, the Orleans County Fair Association president, are leading the effort. Koehler has long been involved with horse shows and 4-H programs at the fairgrounds. The barn remains closed to the public until construction is complete.
The need for an updated barn became clear during the 2006 Buckle Series, which started on Memorial Day weekend. That series includes equestrian agility events such as gymkhana and 5D barrels and poles, drawing children, teens, and adults with their horses on summer weekends.
The new barn is expected to support these and future events at the fairgrounds.
