WEST GLOVER, Kingdom Games held its eighth annual Fly to Pie event on a recent weekend, bringing together runners and bikers for a socially distanced race that followed COVID-19 guidelines.
The marathon run was won by Ed Coleman, 21, of Somerville, Mass., with a time of 3 hours 39 minutes 27 seconds. Deborah Downs, 44, of Watertown, Mass., finished second at 3:47:35. Both participants self-quarantined before traveling to Vermont.
In the marathon bike division, Jonathon Dodge, 41, of Colebrook, N.H., took first place with a time of 1:29:54. His wife Amber Dodge, 40, finished in 1:46:23.
Organizers capped participation at 80 athletes and filled the roster a week before the event. Runners and bikers started individually from the Newport State Airport and the Irasburg town common, with starts spread over three and a half hours. Participants wore masks before and after the race.
The post-race pizza party at Parker Pie was spread over five hours, with each person limited to about an hour and social distancing outdoors. Jay Peak buses shuttled participants back to the airport, six at a time, with masks required.
Musicians Patti Casey and Tom MacKenzie performed after the race. The event raised $972.80 for the Halo Foundation, which supports cancer patients and their families.
