The 12th annual Kingdom Cares Co-Ed Softball Tournament, held over Father's Day weekend in Newport, took a new direction this year. Instead of raising money for a community member facing medical bills, the tournament directed proceeds to the Lake Region and North Country softball programs.

Heidi Santaw, a tournament director, said the change came after no one in the local softball community needed medical assistance. 'We had a good problem,' she said. 'So we got creative this year... Both teams were on board and eager to raise some funds for their programs.'

Lake Region coach Kevin Ingalls said the funds will support player development clinics. 'This opportunity will give us funds to use for player development over the winter,' he said. North Country coach Victoria Brigham, a longtime participant, called the tournament 'a great opportunity' and said being on the receiving end was 'a true blessing.'

The tournament also partnered with North Country's Mobile Mug program, which ran concessions. Seneca Smith, the school's work-based coordinator, said the experience gave students 'the opportunity to meet new people, make meaningful connections, and experience the true spirit of community.'

Rain delayed play on Friday evening, requiring sump pumps to clear the fields on Saturday. The Farmyard Store won the championship, defeating Anonymous in the final.

Santaw reflected on the tournament's longevity, thanking sponsors and volunteers. '12 years of creating memories and supporting people in the softball community,' she said. 'We are lucky to have a group of dedicated people who make sure the fields are playable.'
