Russ Ingalls of Newport and Robert Starr of North Troy will represent the Essex-Orleans District in the Vermont Senate after both received more than 20 percent of the vote in the November 3 election.

Starr, a Democrat and longtime legislator, led the field with 8,668 votes. Ingalls, a Republican and political newcomer, earned 7,739 votes. The district elects two senators, so the top two finishers secure seats.

The remaining three candidates each received roughly 13 percent of the vote. Jonathan Morin, a Republican, got 5,354 votes; Ron Horton, a Democrat, received 5,100; and John Rodgers, running as an Independent after previously serving as a Democrat, finished fifth with 5,032 votes.

Ingalls had shown strength in the August primary, when he took more votes than any other candidate at 3,318.
