The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a flash flood warning for portions of Caledonia, Washington, Orleans and Lamoille counties, effective until 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
As of 7:31 p.m., Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional 0.5 to 1 inch possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, the Weather Service said.
Locations that may experience flash flooding include Wolcott, Elmore, Woodbury, Hardwick, Craftsbury, Greensboro, Morristown, Lake Elmore and Elmore State Park.
Police urge residents to turn around and not drive through flooded roads, noting that most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Anyone who observes flooding is asked to report it to local emergency services or law enforcement.
