BURLINGTON, North Country Union High School sent its track and field Falcons to the Vermont State Division I Championships at Burlington High School on Saturday, where throwers and relay teams led the way despite rainy conditions.

On the girls side, senior Morgan Shaffer took second in shot put and senior Abigail Dunn placed fifth. Avery Sykes finished third in javelin in her first individual event at states. The girls 4x100 relay team, Rosy Carvalho, Farrah Pepin, Marlo Maxwell, and Myrah Kearse, placed third behind a team that set a state record. Kearse also finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

For the boys, junior Cullin Ward overcame a recent injury to place second in shot put and fifth in discus. Landyn Machado finished fifth in shot put. Alex Lancaster took fourth in discus, and the boys 4x100 relay team of Charlie Eickleberry, Lancaster, Jacob Michael, and Julian Larsen finished sixth.

Head coach Bria Arant praised the team's perseverance. "The state championships mirrored much of our observations from the preseason: a small core group of seniors lead an emerging field of talented and gritty underclassmen. PR's were hard to come by on a rain soaked morning but the NCUHS track and field team persevered through the elements," Arant said.

The girls team finished eighth overall with 24 points. The boys tied for tenth with 17 points. Ward and both girls relay teams qualified for the New England High School Championships next weekend in Maine.
