A Hardwick man faces a gross negligent operation charge after driving the wrong way on Interstate 91 in St. Johnsbury on the evening of July 7.

Vermont State Police said a trooper was conducting a traffic stop near mile marker 132 at about 7:50 p.m. when a vehicle was seen traveling southbound in the northbound travel lanes. Troopers responded and safely stopped the vehicle near mile marker 131.

The driver, Norman Gravel, 77, of Hardwick, was issued a criminal citation to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court on July 27 at 8:30 a.m. to answer the charge.

NEK will be looking into whether Gravel has any prior driving infractions or license suspensions through state records.
