Derby's selectboard is weighing two competing needs at the town office: more parking and preservation of tennis courts. In 2022, the town received a grant for a park behind the town office, plus $60,000 for a park-and-ride lot that was to extend the existing parking over a basketball court and three tennis courts. Those courts were rebuilt at a higher elevation, but the number of tennis courts was reduced to one, while four pickleball courts were added.
Now, with parking frequently full and plans to add three soccer fields, the selectboard is moving forward on the parking expansion. But some residents are asking that two of the tennis courts be saved. The board is considering alternatives.
The full discussion will be reported in the June 11, 2026, edition of the Newport Daily Express.
NEK will be looking into the original grant terms and whether the parking expansion can be modified to preserve the courts.
