Sgt. Debra Munson has been promoted to lieutenant and named commander of the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks, effective Nov. 8. She succeeds Lt. Walter Smith, who is retiring early next year.
Munson joined the state police in January 2011. After graduating from the Vermont Police Academy, she was assigned as a trooper to the Derby Barracks. In January 2017, she transferred to the St. Johnsbury Barracks as a detective trooper in the Criminal Division. She was promoted to sergeant and patrol commander at the Derby Barracks in May 2017.
Munson also served on the Vermont State Police Tactical Services Unit from 2014 to 2016 and has been on the Members Assistance Team since 2018. She is an instructor on use of force and defensive tactics for the state police and at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford.
As field station commander, Munson oversees law enforcement services for the communities served by the Derby Barracks. The barracks provides police coverage throughout Essex and Orleans counties, and offers assistance to the Newport, Brighton, and Canaan police departments, the Essex and Orleans county sheriff's departments, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The station patrols 25.25 miles of Interstate 91 and other state and local roads. It covers half of Vermont's border with Canada and plays a key role in the state police homeland security mission, working daily with CBP and the FBI.
