The Ben & Jerry's Foundation has awarded a $7,500 grant to the Orleans County Restorative Justice Center in Newport, the center announced. The funding will support work to assist children whose parents are incarcerated.

The center has spent roughly a year raising awareness about the needs of these children. The grant will help coordinate training for schools and other community groups, encourage communication with incarcerated parents, and ensure children are prioritized during arrest, incarceration, and re-entry.

“When we prioritize their needs, our procedures, policies, and processes are examined with more scrutiny for unintended effects,” said Barbara Morrow, executive director of the center. She noted that the North Country Supervisory Union, Newport Probation and Parole, the Orleans County Sheriff's Office, and Newport Police are already involved, along with the Resilience Beyond Incarceration project in Lamoille County.
