A 24-year-old Alabama man died on July 4 after his motorcycle left the roadway and hit a tree on Vermont Route 58 in Irasburg, according to Vermont State Police.

The crash was reported around 11:31 a.m. near Houston Heights. Responders included state police, Orleans Ambulance Service, and the Irasburg Fire Department.

Investigators said Korban Rutherford, of Hanceville, Alabama, was heading west on Route 58 when he swerved off the road and struck a tree. He was taken to North Country Hospital with serious injuries and later died despite life-saving efforts.

Witnesses reported that Rutherford appeared to swerve after noticing a second vehicle entering Route 58 from Houston Heights. That vehicle, driven by Cody Miller, 28, of Irasburg, was attempting a left turn from the eastbound lane onto the westbound lane but came to a complete stop before entering the westbound lane. Investigators said Miller did not infringe on Rutherford’s lane and was not injured. Miller’s vehicle sustained no damage.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information can contact the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881.
