A Westmore resident has asked the town's select board to take a closer look at fireworks in the community, arguing that increasingly elaborate displays are disturbing bald eagles.
Tim Hayes appeared at the board's Monday meeting and said the problem goes beyond the occasional bottle rocket. He described expensive, professional-grade shows that rival town-sponsored events, with the explosions continuing all summer rather than just on the Fourth of July.
Hayes said the blasts pose a particular threat to bald eagles, which nest in the area and are sensitive to loud noises. The birds, a national symbol, could abandon nests or suffer other harm, he argued.
The select board took no immediate action. A copy of the full Barton Chronicle article, which includes additional detail, is available behind a paywall.
