The Vermont Agency of Transportation has started a slope remediation project on U.S. Route 2 in Plainfield, just west of the Vermont Route 214 intersection. The work is aimed at stabilizing a failing slope between the highway and the Winooski River that was damaged during the 2024 flooding.
The contract was awarded to J.A. McDonald Inc. in June 2026. Construction is expected to run from summer 2026 through summer 2027. Contractor mobilization began Monday, June 29, with traffic control signage being installed this week.
From June 29 through July 2, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., U.S. 2 west of Vt. 214 may have intermittent single-lane closures with flagger-controlled alternating traffic. Crews will be off on Friday, July 3, for Independence Day and are scheduled to return Monday, July 6.
Work includes installing stone fill for slope stabilization, guardrail, and other roadway improvements. Weekly email construction updates will be sent to stakeholders. To sign up, contact project public information consultant Elaine Ezerins at (603) 782-2460 or via email.
The Washington County Sheriff's Department posted on June 26 advising travelers to avoid delays, noting deputies will be in the area on routine patrol but not involved in traffic control except in emergencies.
