Two separate ATV crashes on June 20 sent two teenage riders to Androscoggin Valley Hospital with serious injuries, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers.

The first crash occurred around 1:04 p.m. on Henry Drive in Milan. A 12-year-old male operator lost control while navigating a turn on private property, causing the ATV to roll over and pin him underneath. His father was unable to lift the machine; first responders from Milan Fire and EMS, Berlin Police, and conservation officers lifted it off the boy. He was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police said rider inexperience was the primary factor.

Less than an hour later, at about 2:04 p.m., conservation officers still on scene from the first crash responded to a second accident on the Yamaha Connector Trail in Berlin. A 15-year-old male operator experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure when the rear wheel detached, causing him to lose control, strike a tree, and be thrown from the vehicle. Fellow riders rushed to help. Berlin Fire Department used a UTV to remove the teen from the trail; he was also taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Both riders were wearing approved helmets and eye protection, which police said reduced the risk of further harm. Conservation officers reminded ATV operators to always wear protective gear, ride within their abilities, and ensure machines are in good working order before trips.
