Wildfire smoke will bring some of the week's poorest air quality to the North Country and Upper Valley on today, July 16. Police have issued an Air Quality Alert that remains in effect through midnight.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is forecast to range from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups, with the densest smoke settling over areas under the alert.

The smoke is moving from north to south, with a weather boundary expected to push the thickest smoke into southern New England by this afternoon, leading to improved conditions Friday.

Health officials advise those with respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, or asthma to limit time outdoors. The smoke can irritate eyes, nose, and throat, and the very young and elderly may be more vulnerable to poor air quality.
