Vermont State Colleges System Chancellor Jeb Spaulding announced April 22 that he is withdrawing a reconfiguration proposal that would have closed Northern Vermont University's Lyndon and Johnson campuses and Vermont Technical College's Randolph Center campus.
The proposal, presented to the Board of Trustees earlier this week, would have reduced career-focused liberal arts campuses from three to one, consolidating programs at Castleton University and VTC's Williston campus. Spaulding said the board heard from thousands of students, employees, communities, and state leaders who deemed the plan too damaging.
“I accept their judgment,” Spaulding said. “Indications are positive that the State leaders will be assisting us to get through the immediate problem, although we are not sure of exactly how at this time.”
No campuses will close this fall, he said. Spaulding plans to work with legislators, the administration, and campus and community leaders to develop a new, sustainable plan.
