The Newport City Council on June 17 approved a three-year contract with Newport Downtown Development (NDD) and discussed a $3 million grant award for infrastructure and streetscape upgrades.

Mayor Rick Ufford-Chase informed the council that the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) granted the funds. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.

Stephanie Clarke, a consultant with White & Burke, told the council she is conducting a feasibility study for a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district in the downtown area. The study includes a market analysis and community outreach. The council suggested hiring a public relations firm for broader engagement.

The contract with NDD was amended to require the group to provide information on the advantages and disadvantages of a TIF district as a funding source for the infrastructure work.
