NEWPORT CITY, The Vermont Transportation Board held a public hearing Tuesday afternoon to consider renaming a section of Interstate 91 as the David "Chris" Maland Memorial Highway.
Maland, a U.S. Border Patrol agent, was killed in the line of duty in 2025. The proposal would designate a portion of the highway in his honor.
Commander Jim Crowe of the American Legion Newport Post #21 spoke during the hearing, held in the City Council Room. A crowd of community members attended to give testimony.
The Transportation Board has not yet announced a decision on the renaming.
