Newport City has secured two federal grants totaling $3.5 million for downtown revitalization, according to a joint announcement from Governor Phil Scott, Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch, and Congresswoman Becca Balint.

The Northern Border Regional Commission awarded $3 million to the City of Newport for replacing sewer and water lines, as well as downtown transportation and streetscape improvements. The total project cost is estimated at $3.75 million.

Separately, the Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA) received $500,000 toward acquiring the downtown site known locally as "the pit." The estimated total cost for that acquisition is $1 million.

The city council will discuss the awards at its meeting on June 25. Police could not be reached for comment over the weekend.

NEK will follow up on the council meeting and the status of the pit acquisition.
