Vermont's congressional delegation announced $7.62 million in Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) grants on June 12, with the city of Newport receiving funding for three separate projects.
The NBRC supports economic development in rural areas of northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Newport-area awards include $3 million for upgrading sewer and water lines and improving streets and transportation downtown; $500,000 for Northeastern Vermont Development Association to acquire the downtown “pit”; and $500,000 for the Vermont Agency of Transportation to acquire the 52-acre Newport Railyard.
Other Vermont recipients: Canaan Fire District #2 ($545,572 for water main replacement), Swanton Village ($1,638,329 for stormwater and parking improvements), Town of Danville ($444,955 for a multi-use parking lot), and Vernon Advent Christian Home ($1 million for replacing a skilled nursing facility).
“These are important investments and will help us continue revitalizing rural parts of the state,” Governor Phil Scott said. He thanked the NBRC and the congressional delegation for supporting the program.
NEK will be looking into the future use of the Newport Railyard property and its potential impact on local transportation and development.
