Vermont airports have received more than $9 million in federal relief under the CARES Act to address financial strains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Locally, Northeast Kingdom International Airport in Newport has been allocated $30,000, the same amount as Caledonia County Airport in Lyndonville. Burlington International Airport received just over $8.7 million.
The funding is part of a $10 billion nationwide program for airports included in the CARES Act, passed by Congress in March. Airports may use the money to cover operating expenses, continue construction projects, and meet ongoing needs.
When the CARES Act was enacted, the aviation industry was already seeing an 80 percent drop in passenger traffic nationwide, with expectations of further financial and operational impacts.
