Fire crews responding to a report of smoke alarms and smoke coming from a log cabin on Quarry Road in Sheffield on the afternoon of June 27 found the structure fully engulfed. The Sheffield-Wheelock Fire Chief said dispatchers received the call around 3:30 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing alarms and seeing smoke from windows.
Glover Fire Department assisted, setting up a water supply from a nearby quarry pond to fight the blaze. No one was home at the time, and crews prevented the fire from spreading to an attached garage. The fire was brought under control by about 5 p.m., but firefighters remained on scene until midnight.
One person was displaced as a result of the fire, and three animals were killed. Additional mutual aid came from Greensboro, Hardwick, Sutton, Lyndonville, West Burke, and East Burke Fire Departments. The cause remains under investigation, but police said the fire is not considered suspicious.
