July 10 is now recognized as a date of recurring flooding in Vermont, marking three years since the catastrophic 2023 floods, two years since 2024's repeat, and flash flooding in some Northeast Kingdom communities in 2025. VTDigger, which has covered each event extensively, published a retrospective on Friday highlighting its reporting and the ongoing recovery challenges.
The outlet's coverage included breaking news from the 2023 storm, the award-winning "Downstream" series on the one-year anniversary, and on-the-ground reporting after remnants of Hurricane Beryl caused over six inches of rain in some areas on July 10, 2024. Last year, downpours again triggered flash flooding in the Northeast Kingdom, where recovery has been complicated by the lack of Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance.
VTDigger has partnered with FRONTLINE (PBS) on an investigation into Vermont's flood recovery and preparedness, expected to be published later this summer. National Weather Service meteorologist Seth Kutikoff recommended that residents sign up for VT-ALERT and monitor the NWS website for weather updates.
