Vermont State Police say a horse was euthanized Friday night after it and several other horses escaped through a fence and were struck by a car on Vermont Route 5A/Willoughby Lake Road in Brownington.

A Woodbury man was driving south on the road before 9:51 p.m. when he encountered several horses standing “on or near” the road. His car hit one of the horses, causing significant damage to the vehicle. The two people in the car were not injured.

The horse suffered fatal injuries and was euthanized at the scene. The owners arrived to retrieve the other horses and return them to their property.
