At approximately 8:35 PM, Vermont State Police responded to a hit-and-run in the parking lot of the Walmart on Seymour Drive in Derby. A white Dodge Ram struck a stop sign and then fled the scene. The suspect was described as a medium-height, overweight individual wearing a t-shirt and shorts. At 8:48 PM, officers located the vehicle nearby with extensive damage from the collision. The operator was taken into custody and is suspected of driving under the influence. The operator refused a breath test. At 9:11 PM, Newport police confirmed they had the operator in custody. Officers took photos of the vehicle and the damaged stop sign as evidence. At approximately 9:47 PM, troopers conducted a records check and confirmed the suspect's identity. The investigation is ongoing.
