The Greensboro Selectboard held a public hearing June 24 on proposed amendments to the town's flood hazard bylaw. The revisions are intended to bring the town into compliance with updated National Flood Insurance Program requirements. A previous hearing on the matter was invalidated because not enough selectboard members were present to form a quorum.
Police said the changes are needed to keep Greensboro eligible for federal flood insurance programs. The amended bylaw will eventually be reviewed by the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Updated FEMA flood maps for the area remain under development but have been delayed by federal funding issues. Planning Commission member Janet Showers said the state has been encouraging communities to complete the required bylaw updates, and police expect improved flood modeling when the new maps are released.
NEK will be looking into the status of FEMA flood map updates for the Northeast Kingdom region.
