A new ice cream shop has opened in downtown Island Pond. Granny's Scoops began serving customers July 1 in the building that once housed Hobo's Café on Cross Street.
The business is a family venture owned by Paula Keenan and her daughter-in-law, Paige Crowe. Keenan, a longtime healthcare worker who also prepares taxes in winter, said the idea came from a family discussion about what to do with the vacant space. Crowe, a registered nurse from Newport Center, said the goal was to create more than a place to buy ice cream.
“We’re hoping to have 3 tables, a bench, and a booth (for a place to hang out),” Crowe said.
The shop serves hard ice cream, maple creemees, sundaes, and other frozen treats. It was designed with indoor seating and colorful decor to give customers a comfortable spot to relax after visiting the waterfront, nearby park, or other downtown businesses.
The community response was immediate. During its first week, especially the Fourth of July holiday weekend, lines stretched out the door and around the corner.
The owners also hope to hire local students. “We're excited to offer some of the younger students opportunities,” Keenan said.
