New York Assemblyman Michael Cashman has obtained $100,000 in outside funding for the Ausable Valley Central School District, weeks after voters rejected the district's initial spending plan.
The district's proposed $38 million budget failed at the polls last month. School police then presented a revised budget cutting $250,000, which would eliminate the athletic director, a school resource officer, and all extracurricular coordinator positions. That revised budget goes before voters June 16.
Cashman announced June 9 that he secured $225,000 from local organizations supporting early and adult education. Of that, $100,000 goes to the school district. The remaining $125,000 is split among five groups, including $50,000 for Clinton Community College's women in technology program, $40,000 for the North Country Chamber of Commerce's job training, and smaller amounts for arts and historical programs.
"The district has been strained with the realities that come with being a rural school district," Cashman said in a statement. "These monies will assist with various educational experiences within the district."
Ausable Valley Central School District Superintendent Mark Francia thanked Cashman. "This funding demonstrates Assemblyman Cashman's commitment to the students, families, and communities of the North Country," Francia said.
