The Brighton Select Board voted at its June 17 meeting to install a replacement security camera overlooking Lakeside Park, after what town officials described as repeated vandalism of recreational equipment.
Board chair Mike Testut brought the matter to town manager Mike Strait when he learned of the damage. Brighton Recreation has been offering free equipment, volleyballs, tennis balls, and basketballs, for resident use at the park for three years. While most equipment has been well cared for, recent incidents included kickballs that were “willfully destroyed,” tennis balls found in the lake, and all volleyballs going missing.
“We can’t see what’s going on over there, and that’s something we need to address,” Strait said. “It’s not that we didn’t have cameras, but our camera system has gotten old.”
Strait noted he previously used the old camera to identify people damaging park property. The cost of the new system did not come from the town’s general fund; the source of funding was not detailed in the board’s public discussion.
