Peggy Stevens of Charleston has announced her candidacy for the Vermont House of Representatives seat representing the Essex-Orleans district.
In a letter published by the Newport Dispatch, Stevens said she is running to bring attention to rural community needs, including shortages of essential workers in trades, education and health care, as well as lack of housing, childcare, internet and cell service.
She said she supports spending money now to address these issues, arguing that it is fiscally responsible to invest in repairs and maintenance. Stevens noted that Vermont has received more federal dollars per capita than most states and said she would push for a fair and equitable distribution of that funding to the Northeast Kingdom.
Stevens cited her personal and professional experience in communication, long-term planning and decision-making as qualifications for the job. She also advocated for equalizing pay for teachers and healthcare providers, and for investing in climate solutions and green energy projects.
“There’s no time to waste, so let’s find common ground and get to work on improving life for every one of us in the Northeast Kingdom,” Stevens wrote.
