The Northeast Kingdom Collaborative has named Abby Long as its executive director, ending a competitive public search that began several months ago. Long, who served as interim executive director since September 2025, will lead the regional nonprofit as it continues to convene communities and advance economic development across Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties.
Long previously led the Kingdom Trail Association for eight years. She holds a graduate degree from the School for International Training in Brattleboro and a bachelor's degree from Providence College. A resident of Burke, Long lives with her husband and their 5-year-old child.
“Conducting an open and competitive search was important to our board,” said Dave Snedeker, executive director of the Northeastern Vermont Development Association and an executive committee member of the NEK Collaborative. “Abby’s vision, collaborative approach and proven results made her the clear choice.”
During her interim tenure, Long launched the Housing Hubbub regional convening, coordinated NEK Day at the Statehouse, and helped secure more than $1.2 million in federal REAP Zone funding for local projects.
“Abby leads with a rare blend of professionalism, light-heartedness and creativity,” said Linda Ramsdell, president of Headwaters Community Trust. “This is especially welcome and needed in the Northeast Kingdom, where challenges around health care, housing, the economy and climate change can seem overwhelming.”
Newport Mayor Rick Ufford-Chase said the role demands “bold, deliberative leadership and consistent, thoughtful patience,” adding that Long brings the necessary skill set.
“I believe in the strength of our Kingdom and the power of collaboration,” Long said. “I am excited to work together for a more vibrant and resilient future for our home.”
