IRASBURG, VT, A motorcyclist died after a crash on Vermont Route 58 on July 4, according to Vermont State Police.

Korban Rutherford, 24, of Hanceville, Alabama, was traveling westbound on a 2021 Yamaha YZ250X around 11:31 a.m. when he swerved to the right, left the roadway and struck a tree, police said. He was taken to North Country Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told investigators that Rutherford appeared to swerve after noticing a vehicle entering Route 58 from Houston Heights. That vehicle, a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado HD driven by Cody Miller, 28, of Irasburg, was attempting a left turn from Houston Heights onto the westbound lane, police said. Interviews with Miller and witnesses indicated the Silverado came to a complete stop before entering the westbound lane and did not enter Rutherford’s lane of travel.

Miller was uninjured and his vehicle was not damaged. The crash occurred in clear weather on dry roads.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881.

NEK will be looking into whether the intersection of VT Route 58 and Houston Heights has a history of crashes or safety complaints.
