Clark Colby of Lunenburg, a recent graduate of Lyndon Institute, has received a Land Steward Award from the Vermont Land Trust. The award includes a $500 prize.
Colby was nominated by his Land Management Resource instructor, Ryan O'Malley, who praised his work ethic and understanding of forest ecology. Through his studies, Colby gained technical knowledge of tree growth, forest density, and ecosystem management.
He now works full-time with HB Logging, where he applies his skills to erosion control and is helping the company install solar panels as part of a shift toward clean energy.
“I focus on forestry with improvements to the climate,” Colby said. “Since I was a child, I've wanted to make the environment a better habitat for the animals that live there.”
The Vermont Land Trust has presented Land Steward Awards for 22 years, recognizing high school juniors and seniors dedicated to agriculture and forestry. This year, a private donor doubled the award for all 10 winners.
