Roger Gagnon has lived in Irasburg since 1982 and has spent much of that time serving the town. His latest project was restoring the Orne Covered Bridge, a contribution that caps more than 40 years of volunteer work.

Gagnon was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, and served in the Vietnam War before moving north for a quieter life. Over the decades he has sat on the select board and planning commission, worked as a lister, and taken on other town roles.

“I like being an American,” Gagnon said. “It’s the best country on earth, and people don’t know it. They are so foolish. They don’t appreciate what they have.”

After the military he worked as a repairman for Sears Roebuck and still does carpentry as a hobby. He noticed that the Irasburg common lacked benches for older walkers, so he built sturdy seating that would not be easily stolen.
