Hope in Lyndonville, a nonprofit founded in 2005 by Executive Director Jodie Wheeler, has become a cornerstone of support for families across the Northeast Kingdom. What began in the basement of Wheeler's home has expanded into a full-service operation offering a food pantry, diaper bank, backpack program, and clothing assistance.

Wheeler said she was inspired after seeing a neighbor sell her belongings because she could not afford groceries. "I just thought to myself, we have a huge garden and there's enough to share," Wheeler recalled.

In 2025 alone, the organization assisted 671 households, helping more than 1,500 individuals. During the holiday season, hundreds more children received support.

Marsheila Rossi, who sought help while caring for her young niece and nephew during winter, said the experience eased her anxiety. "I was nervous and had a little bit of shame, but they didn't make me feel that way at all," Rossi said. "They said, 'Listen, everyone needs some help once in a while.'"

Following the July 2023 floods, Hope volunteers mobilized quickly to deliver aid before official assistance arrived. Barry Richwine recalled Hope being among the first groups to check on affected families.
