A West Charleston mother has received a donated vehicle from a Vermont-based nonprofit, easing transportation struggles exacerbated by record-high car prices and inflation.

Sadie Chandler was awarded a 2008 Toyota Prius from Good News Garage, a charitable program that has provided more than 5,500 vehicles to neighbors in need since its founding in 1996. Upon receiving the car, Chandler wrote a note to the donor: “Our family appreciates this very much. The timing was perfect. We had been struggling with transportation in the NEK. Thank you so much.”

Good News Garage says a national car shortage is driving new and used car prices to record highs, making it difficult for low-income individuals and families to afford reliable transportation. The organization reports that donations are down and demand is outpacing supply.

“While we can’t solve the car shortage, we can certainly help some of those who are being hit the hardest,” said Cash Cranson, director of operations at Good News Garage. “However, our ability to help is limited by the number of car donations we receive. During this difficult time, choosing to donate your car is an act of kindness and compassion that makes a huge, immediate impact.”

Good News Garage awards cars through a partnership with Vermont’s Reach Up agency, and recipients must be Reach Up participants to qualify.
