A community garden on Third Street in Newport City is being brought back to life by the One Prevention Coalition, with support from Umbrella Inc. The property, owned by Doug and Vivian Spates, was originally used for a community garden years ago.
Amber Robbins, a coalition member, led a cleanup effort Wednesday. Volunteers Joe Stacey mowed tall weeds while Elizabeth Blackwell used a weed whacker to clear burdocks and overgrowth. The coalition, which works to prevent substance abuse, sexual violence, and assault, sees the garden as an extension of its mission to promote wellness and healthy behavior.
Volunteers are still needed, and those who help will receive fresh produce through the summer, Robbins said.
