Catamount Arts and Northern Vermont University are teaming up to offer drive-in entertainment this summer, the organizations announced June 4.

The series, tentatively set to start in mid-July, will include drive-in movies and live concerts on both NVU campuses in Lyndon and Johnson. Organizers say the format aims to keep audiences safe during the COVID-19 pandemic while providing an outlet for live and large-screen entertainment.

“Drive-in movies are classic entertainment,” Catamount Arts Executive Director Jody Fried said. “We’re looking forward to bringing back that retro, nostalgic family fun. Live concerts will be a new spin on the drive-in experience, and maybe soften the blow of having to postpone this year’s Dog Mountain concerts.”

Audio from the events will be broadcast via NVU’s campus FM radio stations, allowing anyone within range to listen even if they don’t attend in person. Catamount Arts said it plans to book only regional bands, offering paid gigs to local performers.

“Artists are struggling right now,” Fried said. “If we can make our creative economy a closed loop, that’s something we can all feel good about.”

Specific movies, bands, and schedules are still being finalized.
