WEST DANVILLE, Vt., The West Danville Community Club dedicated a flowering crabapple tree on June 9 to Garey Larrabee, recognizing his decades of volunteer work preserving the public beach at Joe's Pond.

According to the local history book "West Danville, Vermont Then and Now, 1781-2021," the beach faced repeated closures over the years due to financial problems. In 1984, Larrabee secured a $48,000 federal grant that funded a grassy picnic area, sandy beach, parking lot and bathhouse with electricity.

When town funding again ran short, Larrabee formed the West Danville Community Club in 2005 to take over maintenance of the beach. The club continues to operate the beach, which remains open to the public.
