A Hardwick resident is warning that a new federal law signed by President Trump last July will lead to significant cuts in healthcare funding for Vermont. Rachel Cole, in a letter to the editor published by the Hardwick Gazette, said the One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes over $1 trillion in reductions to Medicaid, rural hospitals, and public health programs. The cuts are scheduled to take effect after the midterm elections.

According to Cole, the Congressional Budget Office projects that 16 million Americans will lose health coverage over the next decade. She estimated that Vermont will see a $2 billion decrease in federal funding, with more than 11,000 residents losing Affordable Care Act coverage and over 20,000 losing Medicaid.

“Cuts to healthcare affect every family, every community, every business, and cuts to healthcare kill,” Cole wrote. She urged voters to ask candidates how they would address the shortfall created by the law.

NEK will be looking into the potential effects of the federal funding reductions on Vermont's rural hospitals and healthcare providers.
