Fireball meteor burns up 33 miles above Glover

A bright meteor that streaked across the sky over northern Vermont on Sunday evening ended its journey above Beach Hill in Glover, according to NASA.

The meteor flashed into view at around 5:38 p.m. and produced a loud bang as it entered the atmosphere. NASA calculated that it first appeared at an altitude of 52 miles above Mount Mansfield State Forest, then sped northeast at 42,000 miles per hour, traveling 33 miles before burning up 33 miles above Beach Hill.

Classified as a "fireball", a very bright meteor comparable in brightness to Venus, the object weighed about 10 pounds and measured roughly six inches in diameter, NASA Meteor Watch said. More than 100 people reported witnessing the event.
