Danville property owners will see a higher education tax rate this year, the Selectboard learned at its July 9 meeting. The resident rate increased to 1.8584 from 1.7369, while the nonresident rate rose to 1.7427 from 1.6890.
The town is also facing a property reappraisal, driven by a gap between assessed values and sale prices. The work could cost up to $183,000, with $103,000 already saved. The reappraisal is scheduled to start in 2028 and finish in 2030.
In a separate tax matter, the board agreed to let telecommunications company V-Tel take its state tax assessment challenge directly to the state level, bypassing local review. Town Clerk Michelle Leclerc noted similar challenges are occurring in many Vermont towns.
The board awarded a contract to Levaggi Environmental Contracting for $7,400 to remove asbestos coatings from pipes in the North Danville Community Building. Two bids were received, ranging from $7,400 to $13,880.
Under Act 162 of 2026, effective July 1, the town's forest fire warden must now be the fire chief, who may appoint deputies. Fire Chief Dani Cochran will provide names to Town Administrator Keith Gadapee. The board discussed whether town staff could assist with new permitted-burn responsibilities, but a decision was deferred.
The board approved a special-event liquor license for Red Barn Brewing at the Danville Fair on July 31 and Aug. 1, with board member Eric Bach abstaining. It also asked the Town Services Committee to study creating a senior center and received an update on a possible dog park, including a meeting on July 23 to discuss fencing funding.
